Friday, April 28th, was the date of the biggest culinary competition, known as Cupcake Wars. This is a competition of schools, including Montville, Westbrook, Haddam Killingworth, and Morgan. In this competition, bakers of culinary arts classes compete to see which group has made the most appealing and delicious cupcakes. Before this competition, bakers in Morgan’s Culinary Arts II classes competed to see who would move forward to the regionals. The two winners from our school competition were Morgan sophomore Olivia Siciliano and Morgan junior Jaylee Milhomme.

For the school competition, Jaylee and Liv, made a vanilla cupcake with lemon filling, vanilla buttercream frosting, and placed sugar bees on top of the cupcakes. But for this regional competition, they made major modifications to the flavor and the design. For the competition, the cupcake will be vanilla with a raspberry-flavored filling inside. The new design will be similar to the old one, but they have made white chocolate bees, and added a piece of lemon chocolate honeycomb on top. Lastly, for their presentation, they decided to use a piece of a log and fake plants to complete the look of their cupcakes.

Going into this competition, Jaylee and Olivia both felt very confident in the design and taste of their cupcake. With the changes they made, they felt the outcome of this competition was in their hands. Olivia Siciliano went up against her mom, HK culinary arts teacher Joanna Siciliano. Before the competition,  Olivia stated, “I believe I can beat my Mom. I just have to believe and stay positive.”  This was a huge victory for Morgan, as they have not won the regional trophy in years.
