The Morgan Track and Field Boys and Girls team competed in the state championship.
On Tuesday, May 28th, the Morgan Boys track team competed in the Class M State Championship. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, or CIAC, is divided into 5 classes based on the number of students in each school. Class S is the smallest class, followed by classes M, MM, L, and LL. The Morgan boys are members of class M. The Morgan Girls Track team competed in the CIAC Class S State Championship on Wednesday, May 29th. Since there is a smaller number of girls at Morgan, they compete in class S.
All the championships for track and field took place at Veteran’s Stadium in New Britain, CT. On Tuesday, the boy’s meet started at 4:00. The top 6 finishers in each event earn a medal. In addition, the top 3 finishers in each event advance to the State Open, which takes place on Monday, June 3rd, 2024. The State Open consists of the top 3 finishers in each event from every class, and then the next 10 best times. For the Morgan boys team, senior Robby Estabrook qualified for the State Open, finishing second out of 22 in the javelin throw. The Sheehan boys team won the meet, becoming this year’s Class M Boys State Champion. They had a total score of 71 points. The Morgan boys team earned a total of 8 points, placing 25th out of 30 teams.
The Morgan girls competed in the class S Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, May 29th. This meet began at 10:00 am. The same rules apply for medals and advancements to State Open. Sophomore Addy Reed earned a medal in the 1600-meter race, placing 5th out of 19. Addy also placed 3rd in the 3200-meter race, allowing her to advance to the State Open on Monday. The Class S Girls State Champion was Lyme Old Lyme, with a total score of 76 points. The Morgan Girls earned 10 points, placing them 23rd out of 37 teams.
Addy and Robby will compete in their events on Monday, June 3rd at Veterans Stadium in New Britain CT. The meet begins at 1:30 pm. The top 6 finishers for each event here, will move on to New England, where they will compete against the top athletes of all the New England States. These states are Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. This meet will take place on Saturday, June 8th, 2024, at The University of New Hampshire.
