Advisory Gets Festive

Decorated Doors Capture Spirit

Every year, The Morgan School has a door decorating contest in December. The door decorating contest is between all the advisors in the school, so all students get to participate. Students are asked to bring any extra decorations they have around their house to decorate their doors and classroom. All teachers will also have some starter materials from the Dollar Store, such as colored construction paper, scissors, and glue so that students can craft decorations of their own and get creative with their doors.

This year, the door decorating took place on Thursday, December 14th, and Thursday, December 21st. The rules for this year’s door decorating contest, according to digital arts teacher Jessica Mularski are as follows: the students will brainstorm their ideas for decorating, but they must stay at school appropriate to the theme, and their doors have to be decorated. On the 21st of December, all advisory teachers are required to email a photo of their completed decorated door to Mrs. Mularski. On the following day, December 22nd, the winner of the contest was decided after the students in the school voted for the winning door through a Google form. The lucky winners of the contest received donuts and the championship belt for the rest of the school year.

Last year, marine science teacher Emily Lisy’s, English Brooke Mazzarella’s, and Julie Frydenborg’s advisory classes won the door decorating contest, and they received hot chocolate and donuts from Dunkin’ Donuts. Since Ms. Lisy teaches Marine Science, each student made their little fish, decorated them with their names, and attached them to the door. Sophomore Amber Maikowski said, “I enjoyed being able to make the room brighter, and it was fun getting rewarded with a little treat at the end.” There is nothing Morgan loves more than a little competition amongst the students, which we see in spirit weeks when students go all out in their outfits to try to win homecoming court. At this time of year, the students try to go all out with their decorating skills to win a sweet treat from Dunkin’.

This year, the holiday spirit around the hallways was joyous and cheerful. Students were wrapping their doors in all kinds of wrapping paper and hanging up stockings. Students were also playing Christmas music on their phones, and some teachers even played it through their speakers. Literacy Specialist/Interventionist/ML Case Manager Victoria Fox won this year’s door decorating advisory contest, however, she does not have an advisory class, her door was decorated by her and her ML students and they will receive hot chocolate and doughnuts as their prize.
