This year, over our long winter break, students were met with freezing temperatures and tons of snow, receiving over 8 inches of snow – a number we haven’t seen since 2013. However, a select few Morgan students were able to get away from the cold weather and get out of town for the holidays, whether that meant getting some tropical weather or just spending time with family they may not get to see often. Pawprint met up with Mike Klosek, Nathan Remirez, and Sophia Rae, three students who traveled over break, to talk about what they did over break.
This break, Sophomore Mike Klosek is taking more of a tropical turn this holiday season. Mike went on a Caribbean cruise to the Bahamas. Klosek went on this vacation with his father and his father’s girlfriend. Klosek was looking forward to this trip because he doesn’t take vacations quite like this, and he hopes it is not the last. “I’ve never been on a cruise, so it was nice to spend time with my family,” said Klosek, “I went swimming a lot and made a new friend on the boat. His name was Ben; we met at a kids club on the boat,” Klosek said. “We hung out on the ship alot, and we exchanged socials, and we’ve been messaging on Instagram ever since the boat.” Mike spent most of his day relaxing on the boat and spent time swimming with his parents and a new friend. “I had fun and hope I can do it again in the future,” Klosek said. Mike made a memory that was unforgettable on this trip. “My favorite memory would be meeting Ben on the boat, but also being with my family, and being in the warm air,” Klosek said.
Nathan Ramirez traveled over an hour to Springfield, Massachusetts. This is more than a vacation; Ramirez goes up to Massachusetts to visit his aunt and uncle’s house along with his two cousins every year around Christmas time. ”When we come up to Mass., we just pop in to see what they’re doing,” Ramirez said. Luckily, Nathan gets along with his cousin, making it more enjoyable to be up there. “We’re only two years apart, so it’s not horrible to go with them,” Ramirez said. Every year, Nathan goes up to Massachusetts with his mom and dad, and they go and do their annual Christmas shopping, opening presents, and having nice family dinners with their family. As well as visiting family that they don’t get to see often because of how far away they live.
Ramirez is not the only one visiting the family. Sophia Rae spent five days out of her Holiday break in Quebec, Canada, also visiting family, but this time, she is all on her own, along with her grandma in Canada. After a long, 7-hour drive, Rae’s grandma went to pick up Rae and went back to Canada with her. Rae traveled to Canada the day after Christmas, December 26th, and spent time with her grandmother all the way up to New Year’s Day. Rae spent her time in Quebec making memories with her grandma. Every year they go skiing together. This year was no different. “I like to ski, I don’t know the name of the exact mountain, but my grandma and I will go skiing,” Rae said. Skiing is big for someone who lives in Connecticut because there are significantly more skiing slopes in Quebec, so it’s much of a bigger opportunity to ski in Quebec than in Connecticut.
As we’ve seen so far, we’ve seen that traveling is pretty big during the holiday season. Everyone who was interviewed was on a trip to spend time with the people they love most and also to enjoy their holiday break ,making memories and having fun.
