On Halloween night, the MSW (Morgan Saybrook Westbrook) football team suffered another loss, 7-16, dropping to 0-7 on the season. MSW football faced Capital-Prep at the Old Saybrook turf. Although they may not have any wins yet this season, fans still came to support this Halloween night, filling the stands, and decked out in all of their Halloween gear.
The game was cold and very windy, and it looked like we had a chance to win, being that the opposing team was winless as well. Going into the game, players had to deal with rough conditions because of the difference in the warmth on the bus compared to outside on the field with cold temperatures of 48 degrees, and the Morgan team struggled to deal with the harsh winds affecting the players’ throws and catches.
The weather for the night seemed to be a sticking point for the team. The weather that night was frigid and had gusts of up to 45 miles per hour.
Senior captain Christian Jacob-Harris believes if they had worked harder, they would have been able to find more success. “We could’ve passed the ball more, but the wind was very bad.”
Although they may have lost, Junior Front Lineman Pedro Reis didn’t believe it was because of the weather. “I think it was a fair competition, considering that both teams are dealing with the weather, especially the wind and the turf,” Reis said.
The first points of the game came after a great pass into the endzone to get our first touchdown.
Despite an early score from Capital, senior Tristan Elliot was hopeful they would come back. “When we saw them score in the first quarter, I was like, yeah, now we gotta get a touchdown.” Although hope led to despair later in the game. “We were so near the end of the game; we thought we had it in the bag, so we just stopped trying our hardest, and then we ended up losing,” said Elliot.
This game meant a lot to the team. Reis said, “We were just trying to get that one load of motivation, so that we can win the rest of the games and Capital-Prep.” Being that this team has the same season record, they were very hopeful going into the game.
The only score of the game came at the beginning by MSW, which made a great start for the boys. But this success was cut short when Capital Prep scored a touchdown shortly after.
Their frustration was capped off by a 60-yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter after running a play set up by Capitol. “The craziest moment of the game was when they broke away and got a 60-yard touchdown, and we didn’t tackle them,” Elliot said.
The Morgan team takes on Coginchaug next week. Their record is also 0-7, so the MSW team may have a chance to turn their losing streak around.
“We gotta be in the right place, doing the right stuff and make sure we do our jobs, keep each other positive and have each other accountable,” Harris closed.
