Golf: Standout Sport

Team Traveled to TPC

Seniors Sean Davis and Jack Nye are the current 2024 Golf captains. The golf team is coached by Head Coach Eric Bergman and Assistant Coach Jake Rowe. Mr. Bergman has been coaching here at Morgan for 20 years and previously coached for 2 years at Valley. This is Mr. Rowe’s first time coaching. The team had its first official meeting on Friday, March 1st where the Captains and Coach Eric Bergman went over the expectations for the season as well as discussed potential goals. The team’s current record is 2-4. Coach Bergman stated, “We’re struggling. But I do think there’s some potential there.”

There are 15 students on the current golf roster, but only 6 players are allowed to play at matches. The boys compete in playoffs during the practice before a match to decide who plays. Coach Bergman puts as many as 6 players against each other for the remaining spots. Whichever player has a lower score, gets to play in the next match. In golf, the lower the number of strokes, the better.

When it comes to high school sports, golf is different from most. Golf has many unique rules and regulations compared to other sports. At the Clinton Country Club, the home golf course of the Huskies, there is a no-spectator rule, unless you are a member of the club. The club only allows 12-14 players on the course at a time. This includes the opposing team. The team must adhere to the club’s policies for all members (proper golf attire, no hats inside, shirts tucked in, etc.).

The team recently traveled to TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT. TPC is a professional golf course that hosts the Travelers Tournament every June. Professionals such as Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, and many more have played at the course in recent years. Spieth notably pulled off one of the most famous bunker shots in recent golf history to win the tournament on the 18th hole in 2017. According to TPC.com, The Travelers Tournament is “The largest professional sports event in Connecticut”. Captain Sean Davis said, “It was amazing to be able to play at TPC. It was surreal teeing off on the same holes as the pros. The course was in great condition, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to play there.”

Team Thoughts

Coach Bergman- “ I feel blessed to work with young people and have some minimal impact on their lives. It’s great.”

Junior Griffin Raunado- “ Ari and Rachel give me really good motivation for every playoff before match day, so I have a better chance of making the match team”

Junior Luke McComiskey- “ For being my first year playing golf, being able to play at the TPC course was a cool experience. It was a really hard course and tested the entire team, but it was fun.”

Senior Captain Jack Nye- “ My favorite thing about golf is that it’s relaxing, but you also get to be competitive during matches. It’s a fun time with the boys”

Senior Patrick O’Neil- Morgan Golf has been a fun experience because we can play the sport and add more of a competitive spirit to our rounds.”
