Spanish Teacher Jordan Bean has been working at The Morgan School for 5 years. He has also been the J.V. boys basketball coach since he started here at Morgan. When he was in high school, he played basketball on the Westbrook High School boys team for all 4 years. He said, “I love staying current with new trends in basketball and different plays. I also love working with our students at Morgan, on both J.V. and varsity, to help them get better.”
Mr. Bean attended UConn (University of Connecticut) for 4 years, but his senior year he studied abroad in Spain. He took Spanish in high school and college. When he lived with his host family in Spain, he learned how to speak modern day Spanish much better. He came home to America but didn’t forget how to speak fluent Spanish. He’s been back to Spain 2 times, and stays in touch with the host family frequently.
Mr. Bean said, “I went to school not really knowing what I wanted to do.” His first teaching job was as a long term sub for an Italian class, and he fell in love with the idea of teaching. “I decided to become a teacher because of the connection with the kids.”
Mr. Bean, who grew up in Westbrook, is also the track and field coach at Westbrook High School, a position he held for the past nine years. Freshman Julia DeSousa, who goes to Westbrook High School and does track and field, said, “He’s a good coach, and he will push you to do your very best. He is also so funny to talk to during practices and at meets.”
Traveling is something that Mr. Bean enjoys. He wants to travel around the world and connect with lots of different places. He went to Oaxaca, Mexico, and he said he would definitely go back. He also got married in Italy. Over April break, he went on the school trip to Costa Rica. He was very excited to go because it was the first time he went anywhere tropical. He also found a connection to the people because the native language in Costa Rica is Spanish.
Spanish Teacher Laura Luther has worked alongside Mr. Bean for all five years he’s been at the school. She said, “He’s a wonderful man and very hardworking. He is also easy to get along with. He is very involved outside the classroom, and we are happy and lucky that he teaches and coaches at Morgan.”
Mr. Bean will continue to make a big impact on the students and staff at Morgan whether it is on the basketball court or in the classroom.
