The Morgan baseball team defeated Hand on Saturday, May 2nd in a 3-2 extra inning showdown capped by a base hit from Nathan Levy that scored the leading run, bring the Morgan team to 11 and 4 on the season.
In this battle, Jacoby Brown from Morgan pitched six innings while only giving up one run on four hits. Jacoby has had a dominat start to his year with a record of 5-1.
The game was scoreless until the 5th inning. In the top of the inning, Nathan Levy, the 1st baseman hit a line drive double down the left field line to bring home Zack Viens and move Trevor Powell to 3rd. Powell then scored on a passed ball a batter later, putting Morgan up two.
Nathan Levy had 2 RBIs on a 3-4 day. Levy a four year starter was feeling good claiming, “I was dialed in and ready for anything that came at me.”
In the bottom of the 5th, Hand responded with a run of their own after Zack Viens made an full extension diving catch to secure the out, but allow the runner on 3rd to tag up and score, “the catch was important because it brought a ton of energy to the team and kept us in the lead so we were able to keep momentum into the next few innings” Said Viens.
After the 6th, up 2-1, Jacoby Brown started off the 7th walking Hand’s first batter of the inning, ending his night. Trevor Powell came in to close the game but, with 2 outs Hand scored a run on a groundball single to left field. “I missed my spot and they were able to capitalize on that, fortunatly [Morgan] was able to battle back and regain the lead.” Added Powell
In the next half inning, the top of the 8th, the first batter of the inning for Morgan, Gavin Clow, reached on a single to left. With two outs, Nathan Levy drove Clow in with a single to right field.
The Huskies ended up with 10 hits to Hand’s 5.
This game lived up the rivalry that has gone back to Little League. The Morgan junior class beat them in 10u and 12u allstars. 10 members of these Little League teams are also on the Morgan team. Additionally, when the Morgan seniors and juniors were in 8th and 7th grade at Eliot, they played against Polsen, Madison’s middle school, they won in walk off fashion.
A year later the current seniors beat Hand. Hand has won recently, after beating Morgan the last 2 years in a row
. “Every time we play them it is a battle we have 2 great teams and we go up there ready to fight,” Nathan Levy added, this will be his last time playing Hand as he is a Senior ending off the matchup with a win.
