“Force a Metamorphosis” by The Jins
The Jins are a small rock group based in Vancouver, Canada. They gained some traction this past year after their multiple tours across America and Europe, and their popularity really started to rise. They were already known for their song She Said which came out in late 2019 after it got popular on TikTok in 2023. Force a Metamorphosis captures the sharp sounds of the band perfectly and gets the listener into the band’s style instantly.
“Punkrocker” by Iggypop
The song Punkrocker didn’t come out this year, but it did get very popular because of several trends and the Superman movie that came out in July. The song faded in popularity and use soon after the trends died out, and the movie left the theatre, but that doesn’t mean the song should have left with the trend. Iggypop’s song tells a story about not conforming to society and being your own person, but Superman almost changed this meaning. In the movie, they perceived punk rock as being a nice, well-rounded, and equal person who doesn’t conform to a world full of selfishness and corruption
“Tomorrow” by Tyler, the Creator
Tomorrow is viewed better as a full album, Chromokopia, due to it being the main bridge between two separate songs. Chromokopia tells a story through sound and lyrics, and listening to just one song will never do the album justice. While Tomorrow has the least amount of views, 8.3 million, compared to every other song on the Album on YouTube alone, this doesn’t mean that the song itself is bad. While the song may be better listened to in a full album listen, the energy the song gives off, and the unique melodic track playing in the background is really a selling point to the song. It is the underdog of the album. It is hidden and out of the way, but once it is removed, the entire album falls apart.
“Bleed In The Sun” by Sap
Bleed In The Sun is a song written by the small group called Sap. They take influence from the Seattle grunge scene, and particularly Nirvana. While the sound may be heavier and filled with more distortion, Nirvana’s influence on the band is still very noticeable. The lyrics may not make complete sense, or any sense at all, but that is the point of the genre. Sap’s music portrays the raw emotions that humans experience and how they can be confusing to understand.
“Setting Sun” by Post Animal
Joe Keery is most well-known for his role as Steve Henderson in Stranger Things and his band Djo. While his song End of Beginning got really popular to the point where it reached number one on Spotify’s most streamed songs for a short while, underneath all of these successful songs and roles lies the bad Post Animal. Post Animal is another one of Joe Keery’s bands, and it has been overshadowed by Djo for a long while. In Setting Sun, they sing about how everything changes and keeps moving. Nothing stays the same, nor do things stay constant. Setting Sun really hits that idea hard, and almost perfectly.
“Ritalin” by Dexter and The Moonrocks
The song Ritalin by Dexter and The Moonrocks talks about the sensitive topics of pill addiction and addiction in general. The song isn’t loud, chaotic, or angry, but rather tells a story of a struggling person watching their life drift away from what it is supposed to be because of their addictions. The echoing notes enhance the lyrics and synergise with them. While the distorted guitar does get loud at times, it never harms the vocals and lyrics, which makes the song feel more like a story.
