On November 5th 2025, the Morgan student government sent out an email listing subcommittees of student government but despite this they have been lacking participation for these groups.
These committees were formed November 24th 2024 to provide student voice in the school. The committees “can suggest solutions,” said student government advisor, Laura Luther, then “ bring them to the student government, student government talks about it, and then the student government would bring it to the administration.”
These committees used to be full of people and had very good participation, said Luther, but lately not as many people are participating. “Participation used to be amazing,” said Luther, “but in the past few years it has decreased.” and expresses concern about the students in the future not having their voices heard in meetings.
The subcommittees available are administration relations, parent and guardian outreach, athletics, food service, student welfare & society, and academic affairs. Student welfare and safety, and administration relations are the only two subcommittees that have two people; all the others only have one person on them.
Subcommittees and their jobs

The purpose of the Administration Relations committee is to create communication and collaboration between the students and the school administration. And the responsibilities for the students in it are to bring attention to student concerns related to school policies, facilities, and administrative decisions; and to represent student interests in meetings with school officials.
Nicolina Ballone who has only been in the committee for this year. “In the Administration Relations committee, I talk on behalf of many students, and I tell administration what is going on around our school and how we can make the school environment better, and safer,” said Ballone.
Ballone said, “we also talk about things that might happen next year, like obviously i’m not going to be here but for like different things” talking about the committee and what they do and what they will do in the future.
The Committee of Parent and Guardian Outreach is in place to talk to parents and guardians in the school community to get their input on the processes of student government. Members are responsible for recruiting parents and guardians to the committee, giving out important school information, and creating a platform for parental feedback, suggestions, and participation in the school community and student government.
The Athletics committee is to support and promote school athletic programs and activities. Students are responsible for advocating for student-athlete needs, organizing events to boost school spirit, and working with athletic department staff to enhance sports facilities, programs, and policy. Junior and head of the committee Emma Holecz says, “I take notes and open the floor to any other people that have opinions on what we should be doing.”
The Food Services Committee is made to ensure the quality and quantity of food services offered to students is satisfactory to the student body. They are responsible for gathering feedback from students about cafeteria services, working with food services to enhance menu options, ensuring dietary needs are met for students, and researching and understanding the legal bindings of food services.
The Student Welfare and Safety is to ensure the well-being and safety of all students. The students involved are responsible to address issues related to mental health, bullying, and physical safety; work with school counselors, administrative staff, and the Student Resource Officer (SRO) to create a safe and comfortable environment.
“Mekai and I are the head of the committee,” said Rayna Vanderwood, a member, “and honestly we haven’t been able to get a meeting because we have only had two people respond, so we definitely need more people.”
The Academic Affairs Committee is made to address academic concerns and initiatives within the school. They are responsible for work on educational policy improvements, provide support for academic clubs and competitions, and organize tutoring programs. Kate Gardner, head of the committee and the only one on it says “I don’t think we even have one this year because nobody has signed up.”
Student government is always looking for people to join these committees and are grateful for anyone who is interested in joining, the lack of participation makes it difficult for the committees to run.
To join the committee contact Ms. Luther and express your interest. Luther says “If people don’t step up we won’t have a seat at the table when students are invited to share their views, opinions and ideas to help improve Morgan”
