The MSW football team, after a ninth straight loss officially finds itself in a slump. After the game last Friday against Granby , the team was left with a record of zero wins, and nine losses. It hasn’t been a great year at all. Nonetheless, spirits stay high as the seniors, and specifically, captain Christian Harris, attempt to lead their team to what they hope to be a more positive end to the season.
Christian Harris is the sole captain to this year’s team, something extremely uncommon for a football team. Harris has played football for all four years of his high school career. All Harris wants is a win in his final game. Something to look back on and be proud of.
Xzavion Clark, a junior who has been starting on both sides of the ball as a defensive end and running back, has played with Harris for the past three years and his bond with Harris has only grown since, said Clark. Clark spoke positively about Harris. “He’s one of my best friends; we play the same position, and he helps me learn many different things.” Harris has led and helped Clark with many little things, especially in practice. “He’s taught me how to hit the gaps and how to try and make plays happen out of nothing. He’s loud in practice, and when we aren’t concentrating on what we are doing, he makes sure we stay focused and shows us the right way to do things,” Clark said.
For Harris, it’s been the little things that have set this season in the wrong direction. “We haven’t been good at the little things, the difference between winning and losing games are those little things. We need to make the right blocks and make the right reads in order to be a successful team,” said Harris.
In the first game of the season, the Huskies were down by 18 points to a mediocre Valley team. Coming into the second half, Christian was fired up, he broke off for two 20 plus yard runs and helped the team put points on the board. The Huskies ended up losing 18 to 12, but those two runs helped inspire the team and fire them up. It motivated the huskies and brought belief that they had fight in them.
Harris has contributed in many ways this season, most notably on the field, he leads the team in touchdowns and turnovers as well as total scrimmage yards. However, he doesn’t see it as a personal accomplishment. “Without my O-line, I wouldn’t have the same yards or touchdowns as I do now.” Harris is quick to deflect the credit to his teammates and is one of the first to accept his mistakes. “I make plenty of mistakes every game, but it’s good to know my teammates have my back, and they know I have their back,” said Harris.

Off the field, he has helped maintain a healthy team environment and has helped organize fundraisers. One of the more notable fundraisers was the annual car wash that was held in the summer, when football season was just around the corner. The car wash was a huge success, helping the football team raise roughly over three thousand dollars.
Harris made sure his teammates were there and ready to help as well as make flyers and publicly spread the information that a carwash was taking place. At the end of the day, it was all about showing the underclassmen what they will need to do in the coming years.
“I want to pave a way for the underclassmen and show them how things are supposed to be done,” said Harris. Harris wants the underclassmen to know that they should play every game to the fullest because you never know when the last one is going to be.
Trevor Powell, a junior quarterback, is a friend and teammate with Christian for the past three years. “Going into games with Christian is fantastic. He is a great motivator and makes us all believe we can win even if it’s a difficult game and the odds are against us,” said Powell.
“Turning this year around is no doubt going to be difficult, a couple of wins is the best thing that could happen,” said Harris. Powell was also very adamant about there still being games left in the season that are winnable.
“Christian has told us to focus on the next game, one game in the win column would give us the confidence we’ve been lacking,” said Powell Although the MSW football team doesn’t have the greatest record, they keep spirits high. Belief in each other is what keeps them moving and gives them hope for a win, no matter the opposition.
The MSW football team is looking to finish the season stronger than how they started, Christian hopes to inspire the team to better things not just this season, but set winning ways for the next. There last game is this Friday at home against SMSA who have a record of one win and eight losses.
