This year is the first year of the class, Introduction To Interior Design/Clothing Design, at Morgan. Family and Consumer Sciences Educator created the class. Ms. Murphy said she created it because Morgan didn’t have any classes that bridged the art with the technical. Ms. Murphy gave a survey to some of her students last year, and many wanted to have an interior design class here at Morgan. She decided to make the class, but combine it with fashion design because she has some background in fashion design, too. There is only going to be one level of the Intro to Interior/Clothing Design for now.
For the first quarter, students in Intro to Interior Design/Clothing Design learned about interior design and decorating. For one assignment, students worked in groups and requested clients from the Morgan staff. Staff members agreed to have students design a family or living room. For the second quarter, the class focuses on fashion design.
Ms. Murphy said that this class prepares students for a possible career in interior or clothing design because students learn a lot of background information. She said that when students have some vocabulary about materials and techniques if they go and study it, they won’t feel so lost. On October 30th, the Intro to Interior Design/Clothing Design class went on a field trip to Madison Furniture Barn to learn more about furniture styles and decorating techniques.
Senior Ainsleigh Landino said that she took the class because she was interested in interior design as a career path for a little while. Even though she doesn’t want to go into that field now, she still thinks it’s interesting. Her favorite part of the class is when they do practical work, which is when they are working to create a design. Junior Alyssa Ruthstrom would recommend this class because it exposes students to a creative aspect that isn’t offered in other classes. She is interested in interior design and wants to be an interior decorator on HGTV.
Senior Abby Lyon took the class because she wanted to try something she hadn’t tried before. It gave her some insight into something she never considered doing. Her favorite part of the class is the fashion part and designing clothes. Junior Selina Chen would recommend the class because students get to experience and design new things. She no longer wants to have a career in interior design. However, she said it is still nice to take the class. Junior Ava Ruotolo shared that during the field trip, she enjoyed looking around at everything and seeing the coastal beach-themed designs. Intro to Interior/Clothing Design helps her understand what she wants to go into in the fashion world.
