The week of Monday March 7th, I took a trip to Middlesex Community College. I left The Morgan School around 10:15 am to head up to Middletown and arrived around 11:00 am. The school has a very small campus with four main buildings (Chapman Hall, Founders Hall, Wheaton Hall, and Snow Hall). My first impression of the school was not anything special. The buildings are somewhat old and a little outdated (exterior wise), but when I went into Chapman and Founders Hall, they were beautiful. Chapman Hall had a completely renovated lower level that is filled with brand new media, cinema, and graphic design software and technology from grant money given to the school by the state.
The amount of students that attend the school is small. There are about 4,400 students enrolled in a Middlesex related course, but there are usually around 150-400 people on the campus at a time. Middlesex offers tutoring on campus by student or teacher tutors which is a very nice thing to have if you need help with your work. It costs roughly around $4,100 a year to go here if you do not apply for financial aid and/or a scholarship which is fairly affordable these days.
Middlesex offers a variety of degrees such as Accounting, Biotechnology, Broadcast Cinema, Business Administration, Communication, Computer Information, Technology, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Engineering Science, Environmental Science, Fine arts/Fine arts and Graphic design, General Studies, Health information, Management, Human services, Information Systems Manufacturing, Liberal arts and Science Management Machine Technology, Marketing, Multi Media, Ophthalmic, Design & dispensing, Radiologic Technology & Post-Primary Certifications, Technology Studies: Computer Engineering Technology Option and Veterinary technology. If you just read through that whole list, you saw that the school has various options for students to choose from.
Many people see community college as a less experienced choice for people who cannot afford regular college tuition or for someone who could not get into a 4 year college based on their GPA or SAT scores. In this case, this is not true. Community college is a great way for students to acquire an associates degree at a low cost. Many of the credits earned at Middlesex are transferable which means if you wish to take 2 more years of college, you could transfer your credits to ANY state wide school, which means you get to save money on college and receive the same degree students will get for going for 4 years at that school.
