The George Flynn Concert Series is a foundation that provides Clinton with free classical music concerts. These include orchestras, choirs, string quartets, and all other types of ensembles. This began when George Flynn, an amateur violinist, wanted to leave a gift for his hometown of Clinton, Connecticut. He spoke with an attorney to make a foundation that would provide money for Clinton to better enjoy music. When Mr. Flynn passed away in 1997, his will went into effect, and through generous donations and successful investments, the George Flynn Concert Series has been able to continue to put on these performances.
When you think of classical music, you probably hear Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony or Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons playing in your head. However, according to Elaine Godowsky, President of the George Flynn Concert Series in Clinton, “classics” are not confined to traditionally elegant or sophisticated pieces of music. She claims, for example, that “Jazz is an American classic.” A George Flynn Concert can include lesser-known styles of music which the musicians would like to share with the community.
If you hesitate to take advantage of the free classical concerts because you fear the music might be boring or homogenous, you can be assured that that is not the case. Mrs. Godowsky said the foundation tries to “include all types of music because personally, I feel that all music is classical.” The George Flynn Concert Series does not limit itself by focusing on European classics; it seeks to introduce people to music from a broad range of cultures.
The musicians who perform at the concerts in the series come from a variety of backgrounds. Agents are sent out to recruit musicians with remarkable talent, but they also encourage other musicians that may not be as well-recognized who are adept at their instrument. Mrs. Godowsky referred to them as “great, great artists with terrific reputations.” In fact, this past year at Morgan, the Morgan Chorus was given a workshop by “East of the River,” an ensemble that travels, gives performances and teaches about world music. The workshop and concert were sponsored by The George Flynn Concert series, which goes to show how deeply they care about the cultivation of students’ musical talent.
Mrs. Godowsky told us that you can call (860-669-1208) for tickets (which are free). Patrons can request a maximum of four tickets because what she has found is that people will ask for many tickets, but they do not show up for the concert, leaving multiple spots unfilled. These concerts take place all around Clinton, often at The Morgan School or The William Stanton Andrews Town Hall. The next one, which will take place on Sunday, April 7th, 4PM at William Stanton Andrews Town Hall, will feature the Haven String Quartet, accompanied by pianist Andrius Zlabys.
