As of May 22, the Morgan girls lacrosse team finished their regular season, finishing 8-8. Morgan fell just short of the Shoreline Tournament but made it to the State tournament.
This season, Morgan had some big wins. One of the most notable wins was against Rocky Hill. Rocky Hill is a class M school and was a game very important for the Morgan girls lacrosse team to win for states. After finishing regulation tied, the team went into overtime, with sophomore Nora Winsor scoring the winning goal, ending the game 8-7.
Sophomore midfielder Emma Holecz led the team in goals per game this season, as well as assists per game, shots on goal, ground balls, goals, assists, and points. She shared, “I feel like the season went well this year. Since we lost a lot of people that contributed to the teams’ success, I believe we did a great job stepping up.”
Morgan scored 145 goals over the season, averaging 8.5 goals a game. They had 373 shots on goal and 68 assists this season. “Last season we did not have many assists, and this year we have really focused on sharing the ball,” Holecz shared.
Head coach, Bill Lindsay, said that the team improved in a number of areas from last season. “We had more assisted goals this year and really shared the ball well at times. Returning players scored 100 more goals this year, which is very impressive.”
Annabelle Parent, Morgan’s sophomore varsity goalie, had 156 saves and ended the regular season with a 0.505 save percentage.
For the upcoming postseason, as well as future seasons, Holecz believes the team can still improve on some things. “I think we can improve on our communication and in-game adjustments. I feel like we all know what to do because we all have such strong lacrosse knowledge, but don’t know how to make changes,” Holecz shared, “since our team is so young I’m excited for what is to come from our team.”
Coach Lindsay shared, “I think we can improve our emotional maturity and how we handle pressure, this is a young team, and we are making progress in this area. Beating Rocky Hill, which is a class M team, in overtime is an example.”
With the majority of the team being sophomores, this team is considered a very young team.
For the States tournament, Morgan girls lacrosse is the 15 seed and will be facing the 2 seed, Granby Memorial, on Tuesday, June 3, at 5:00 on the Granby Memorial High School Stadium Field.
With the regular season now over, head coach Lindsay shares, the Morgan girls lacrosse team has shown growth and a strong competitive spirit. The team is ready for the challenges ahead, and is prepared for the upcoming postseason.
Lindsay said, “I think we have a good core of young players, and we should be in the mix for the Shoreline playoffs next season,” and, “given that the core of the team are only sophomores, I think it was a successful season that included a lot of positives to build on.”
