On May 8th, the Morgan’s girls lacrosse team lost 3-13, in a second-half blowout against Old Lyme at Indian River. This now makes Morgan’s record 6-5 on the season.
This game was a tough loss for the Morgan girls’ lacrosse team. “Last year, we lost pretty badly to Old Lyme both times during the regular season, but when we played them in shorelines, we only lost by one. This team isn’t unbeatable, and we should use it as fuel to beat them,¨ said sophomore midfielder Emma Holecz. This was the second game against Old Lyme this year; the first game the girls played against Old Lyme was also a loss for Morgan.
The first half of the game was close, and Morgan was only down by one by halftime. During the second half, Old Lyme scored another 9 goals, forcing Morgan to play primarily defensively. Emma Holecz scored all three goals with no assists during the first half of the game.

By halftime, Morgan was only down by one point. Unfortunately, Old Lyme scored nine more goals during the second half of the game, resulting in 13 total goals throughout the whole game. Old Lyme as a whole team is a very experienced, well-taught team. Their offense is highly trained and athletic.
During the game, Morgan’s offense had trouble turning the ball over to the other team. Morgan girls lacrosse coach, coach Bill, said, “We really struggled turning the ball over on offense and on our clears. We need to have more composure when we have the ball.”
Although during the game, Morgan’s offense was struggling, Morgan’s defense, overall, was able to keep Old Lyme out of the critical scoring area. However, their downfall came with their inability to get the ball out of the defensive zone. “We played very well in our settled defense. We really made them work hard for their opportunities. But unfortunately, we were forced to defend for long stretches of the game,” said Coach Bill. Although there was an 11-goal difference in the ending score of the game, Morgan’s defense played very well, forcing Old Lyme’s offense to work for the opportunity to score a goal.
There are no more in-season scheduled games against Old Lyme for Morgan. If Morgan makes it to shorelines and or states, they most likely will end up seeing Old Lyme again.
Although the result of the game was unfortunate for Morgan, they are looking forward to learning from the loss. ¨The team can use this as motivation because we may see them again if we make shorelines,” said Emma Holecz
