More Than Just a Game: A High School Golf Coach's Story

For Eric Bergman, being a high school golf coach is about more than just teaching kids how to swing a club. It’s about helping them grow as people.

He loves seeing his players improve, not just in their golf game, but also in how they act and treat others. “That’s the most rewarding part,” he says, “seeing them grow.”

Bergman remembers a specific moment when his team lost a tough match. Even though they were disappointed, they showed great sportsmanship. They shook hands with the other team and congratulated them. This made Bergman proud. It showed that he was teaching them important life lessons beyond the golf course.

Of course, coaching isn’t always easy. Many of Bergman’s players are new to the sport, so he spends extra time helping them learn the basics. Another challenge is the lack of good practice facilities. “A lack of facilities presents a considerable challenge,” he admits. Without a driving range or other resources, it’s harder for his team to get the practice they need. But Bergman doesn’t let these challenges stop him. He’s always looking for ways to help his players succeed.

Bergman also has to balance his coaching duties with his teaching job. He makes sure to prioritize his teaching responsibilities but still finds time for student clubs and programs. He knows taking care of himself is important to avoid getting burned out.

Bergman sees himself as a friend and mentor to his players. He focuses on building strong relationships and supporting them in every way he can. He wants to help them do their best, no matter the score. For Bergman, success isn’t just about winning. It’s about seeing his players become better people, both on and off the golf course. As he puts it, “It’s about fostering personal growth.” He wants to help them develop into well-rounded individuals who shine not just in golf but also in the classroom and in life.
