Tyler Farrell doesn’t just play sports at the Morgan School; he leads them. He is a senior captain of three sports and has been a lacrosse captain since his junior year.
Farrell’s only sport before his high school career was lacrosse, which he has played since first grade. He picked up wrestling and football in his freshman year. Tyler said going into freshman year, he wanted to lose weight and expose himself to a new atmosphere. He was never the best at his sport, but coaches always noticed his work ethic and the way he acted towards teammates. Even when Farrell had a bad day, his attitude never changed. He wanted the best for the team. He didn’t become a captain because he was the best player on the team; it’s because he wanted it the most, and his work ethic made everyone else on the team change attitudes. What separates him from other athletes is that he isn’t just focused on his sports, his academics, and how he’s never the best at his sport, but without him, the team would fail.
While talking, Farrell shared about his youth years of lacrosse, and he said, “growing up and playing lacrosse has been my best experience playing with my friends and really loving the game”.
It hasn’t been easy for Farrell in sports, mentally and physically. During his Junior year playing football, he tore his MCL, which would take him out for the rest of football and wrestling. Farrell was not used to being on the sidelines and watching. After not being able to play sports, he felt rusty, not being able to move for a couple of months. He was also named a captain of the lacrosse team as a Junior, so he had to take care of his struggles while leading the team during a rough season, with the team going 3-13 last year.
“Being a captain in three completely different sports has taught me how to lead different types of kids,” Farrell said. He talked about how many kids learn in different ways, some are new to the sport, and others take criticism in different ways, so he had to balance his approach to others.
Outside of sports, Tyler is an above-average student. Over his four years at the Morgan School, he has maintained a 4.0 GPA and has recently received the CIAC Scholar-Athlete award. While at Morgan, he realized he had a passion for the sciences, and he is pursuing his future in Nursing. Tyler said, “It has always interested me from a young age, and when I started taking science classes in high school, I knew It’s what I wanted to do”.
Tyler had many options on where he could attend school next year. A couple of his choices were Northeastern, UCONN, Quinnipiac, and Sacred Heart. Earlier last month, Tyler committed to The University of Sacred Heart. “I picked Sacred Heart because when I visited the campus, I felt a connection, and when I got into the nursing program, I knew I would end up going there”.
Tyler did not commit to play any sports, but he recently decided to join the club lacrosse team at the University of Sacred Heart. Tyler and the coach have been in contact, looking forward to next year. “ It’s good that I will continue to play Lacrosse, even if it’s at the club level. I’m excited to meet new people and have a fresh start.”
While Farrell’s high school career is about to end, he has left an impact on others and left a legacy behind.
