On Wednesday, March 26th Morgans’s band and chorus students had the opportunity to go on a field trip to see the Broadway show “Wicked” at the Gershwin Theater in New York.
The Gershwin Theater, originally named the Uris Theater, is now named after brothers George and Ira Gershwin, who wrote several Broadway musicals, including Lady Be Good, Oh, Kay!, Funny Face. It has 1,933 seats with two levels (floor and balcony).
The trip cost $600 per student to attend, covering the costs of buses, food, and ticket prices.
People who went on the trip also had the chance to walk around the city with friends. They woke up early to get to the school at 6:30, they took the bus all the way to New York, and had to walk in order to go to the theater. Sophomore Hayden Darr commented, saying, “It was a great experience being able to see the city.” Travis Aiken added, “being able to be in the city with my friends made it more memorable.”
“Wicked” has been around since June 10, 2003, and is a fan favorite. It comes from The Wizard of Oz. “The show was fantastic,” said Darr who has never seen the show before, said it made a lasting impression. Wicked is about what happened before The Wizard of Oz, focusing on the arrival of the witches in Oz and how they were able to become powerful in the region.
The trip comes off the heels of the hit high school musical, Mamma Mia. Mamma Mia was the first sold out show at Morgan’s new building, and kids are looking to build on that success for next year, even with lead actors like Kasey Allin graduating.
After the musical was finished, the group went to John’s Pizzeria, which is a nice, established restaurant that has been around since 1997. It used to be the Gospel Tabernacle church before being turned into a restaurant because of this it is nicknamed The Cathedral of Pizza. They serve medium (14in) and large sized (16in) pizzas. They make thin crust pizzas and have a list of deserts you can try.
On the way home, the chorus and band students ran into some major traffic near the Connecticut, New York state line. Travis Aiken said, “It was the worst part of the trip, we were on the bus for 3 hours, but overall I had a blast.”
