On Monday, January 11th, students from the new broadcasting club went to Valley Regional High school to begin the process of starting a new program here at Morgan. At Valley, they have advanced technology and commentators that work to create a program called Valley TV. Following in these footsteps, The Morgan Pawprint has created their live broadcasting club for interested students to create a similar platform.
Sophomores Gavin Clow and Trevor Powell, along with Junior Jacquelyn Ciarleglio, and Seniors Alyssa Ruthstrom and Carson Dowd, went to Valley Regional High School on Monday where they sat alongside Valley students learning about their technology and more about their program in hopes to create something similar in the coming years.
Journalism teacher, Eric Carroll, alongside new tech teacher, Alex DiStefano, have created a new club at Morgan called live broadcasting, or Morgan Live. Their goal is to create a live broadcasting program that both live streams and commentates on sports events, similar to Valley TV.
Mr. Distefano said the goal of the club is to “bridge the gap between community and school,” so more people in the community have access to school events. He also shared that down the line, they hope to branch out to things such as the musical and other events that families and friends can watch from home.
Mr.Carroll says that he wanted to create this opportunity after meeting Hartford Courant writer Allison Cross who addressed the shortage in jobs in the industry. He says that he “wanted to show students that there are other career options in the journalism field.”
The club had their first meeting on Friday, January 10, where they discussed roles and responsibilities and talked to those interested. So far, the main people showing interest in the club are kids in Journalism, but this is mainly due to the fact that many people don’t know about it.
Sophomore journalism student, Saorise O’beirn, expressed her interest in the club, saying “I’m really excited because I want to go into journalism when I’m older, so this is a good opportunity for me.” She also expressed her hope for the club to be successful, and her desire to begin the process of really starting up the club.
Moving forward, the club hopes to meet on either mondays or fridays and they hope to live stream and commentate at least one basketball game before the end of the season.
