On Tuesday Night, the Morgan girls varsity soccer team won against Thomaston 2-0.
The game was at Wethersfield High School. This is because it was a state game and needed to be a mutual field. It was a cold night, with dry air, and wind. Everybody had gloves on in the stands. Some of the players even wore gloves. In the first half of the game, both teams struggled to score. Both defenses played great and both teams were getting shots on the net, but nobody scored. Both goalies were very focused and were saving lots of shots. The two of the team’s crowds were very tense and were waiting for a team to score. It was a long first half that had led into halftime.
After halftime, both teams talked their game strategy out. In the first 30 seconds of the second half Olivia Ruotolo scored. This was a big momentum change for Morgan and gave them energy going into the second half. The score was 1-0. The game started to pick up the pace and could tell it was getting more intense. Thomaston was looking to get shots on net but Morgan’s defense was just to strong. Shortly later in the second half, Rachel Spaziano also scored for Morgan, making the score 2-0. Rachel is a captain of the girls team. Both teams played the game out until the buzzer sounded. This was a crucial game for both teams. Whatever team won that night would advance to the 2024 CIAC girls’ soccer state championship. This has yet to take place since 2010 for Morgan. I had asked Rachel how she felt going into states and she stated “Me and the team are very excited to go compete in the state championship and have been getting ready all week, were such a unified group of girls and have such good teamwork together!”.
