On November 20, 2024, the Spanish club will have a collaboration with the cooking club, in which they will cook arepas, a typical dish from Colombia and Venezuela.
The people in charge of this collaboration are the Spanish teacher Karla Rivadeneira and the consumer science teacher Susan Murphy. They will teach the students of their clubs how to cook Venezuelan arepas. Arepas are one of the most common foods in Venezuela, they are made from corn flour, they contain chicken or meat and a very good avocado sauce.
The reason for this collaboration is to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Due to time constraints, it was not possible to hold the event during Hispanic Heritage Month. That is why it was decided to do it now. The idea is for people to get to know Latin food and learn more about Latin culture.
Hispanic Heritage Month is very important for many Hispanics in the United States because they have the opportunity to celebrate their country, remembering it with large celebrations or a family lunch with typical foods from each country.
Junior Angelina Vazquez spoke about the importance of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and said, “It is important for me to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month because this way I can remember where I am from and where my roots come from.” She was born here but her roots come from Ecuador, and she feels very proud to know that she has two nationalities and that she can enjoy both. This year Angelina played field hockey and did dance.
The Spanish club is a class where everyone is welcome regardless of culture. They meet every Wednesday after school until 3:15. They do really fun things, they watch movies, play games, give presentations and they mostly talk about Hispanic cultures and the importance of learning about more cultures.
For the members of this club, it is very important to continue learning more about different cultures since most of them are Hispanic. Sofia Barrientos, a junior, spoke about the importance that she has with the Spanish club saying, “For me, the Spanish club is very important because I can share something about my culture and at the same time I can learn about more cultures.”
The cooking club meets every Thursday after school until 3:00 pm. They talk about different cooking techniques. They also make food for fundraisers. And this Sunday they will have a food drive at the Big Y from 100:00 am until 12:00 pm.
We hope you can attend this day, which will be very fun.
The collaboration will take place in classroom A06 after school on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. For more information, you can contact [email protected] or [email protected]
