Prom is the one of the best times to have fun and socialize, but it comes with many drug and drinking abuses. To combat that at Morgan, after prom, a mock car crash is being set up in the Morgan parking lot before prom to bring awareness to the consequences.
A demonstration and fake scene will occur in May, 2025, to recognize the importance of neglecting substance abuse to teenagers. A group of student actors are specifically asked to act in this scenario. There will be two sets of teens: one set that abuses drugs and drives recklessly, and one that is responsible. In a pre-video, they will both be driving, and once they crash, outside there is the scene. One student is “killed” to emphasize the dangers of drinking and driving, and how it can affect others heavily. One student that is participating in the act, Hayden Darr, says, “I think this demonstration will affect others’ decisions, and it will set the scene.” This student suggests that it will be helpful and beneficial to the students all around Morgan.
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, in the U.S., the fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16-19 year olds is about 3 times the rate for drivers ages 20 and over. This is the recurrence rate especially during the prom and graduation season. The fatal crash rate per mile driven is nearly twice as high for 16-17 year olds as it is for 18-19 year olds. These statistics drive the reasoning to demonstrate the dangers of substance and alcohol abuse.
This demonstration is put together by the Clinton police department and the Morgan health teacher, Mrs. Lupone. Mrs. Lupone wanted to become a health teacher to educate teens about the dangers and benefits, which is why she wants to make sure teens at Morgan know the dangers of alcohol-impaired driving. Mrs. Lupone mentioned, “Health is the most important part of life, so I will make sure the kids know the importance of fitness and wellness.” She proves this right by putting in her hard dedication and determination all throughout her responsibilities as a health teacher.
