If you walk into room A42, the collab room, at 7:20 am, every other Thursday, you’ll be met with a cheery and uplifting impression and a room filled with high school students completing service projects such as cards for veterans and helping in the local retirement home. However, this year, it’s a bit different and a bit louder due to a new rule concerning attendance being implemented. In an effort to spotlight a relatively popular club, the Pawprint has reached out to the Interact club including its advisor, History Teacher, Diana Rizzo, and one of their members, Briana Norman.
The Interact club was created in 1997 by the Morgan School community. The students and teachers created it in order to help students participate in helping out not just the Morgan community but the whole Clinton community, whether that be by participating in the Clinton Food Kitchens to working in retirement homes profit-free.
This year, the Interact club has decided to add a new rule involving attendance. Before Interact implemented this rule, students would allegedly skip meetings and only go to any events Interact would hold. Due to that fact, they have implemented an attendance rule, where each student is only allowed to have one absence per semester from the club. So far the attendance has reportedly gotten better since this rule has been implemented, and they hope for it to stay that way.
In another interview, Briana Norman commented, “It doesn’t really affect me as it would other students.” Interact implemented this rule to hopefully improve attendance and persuade students to show up. Mrs Rizzo commented, “A lot of kids just come and go as they please.”
Students last year seem to have had a great time participating in Interact. Previously, Interact Club has volunteered at Ocean Meadows, a retirement home, helping out any senior citizens, and even going as far as to create mini trick-or-treat bags for them.
Additionally, they went to Glenville, and instead of regular trick or treating, they did something called reverse trick or treating, where instead of asking for candy, they would go around giving candy to folks. Some more popular or familiar work of theirs may include Christmas in Clinton and the Beach Clean-ups.
If you are thinking about joining the Interact club, it will go on your record and can improve your chances at NHS and can help with and appear on your college applications, but to have these perks added to your record, you must participate actively within the club, whether it be going to their meets or participating in any events they schedule.
Interact is a club that helps all students of Morgan and the community of Clinton, Mrs Rizzo, and the rest of the club hope to have more members this year along with hoping to have a production and fun year.
