In Morgan Girls Soccer, the title of captain is more than an accomplishment, it’s an honor. For the 2024 fall season, two academically accomplished, talented athletes will carry the heart of Morgan Girls Soccer. After long consideration of the candidates for captains, Coach Harder announced seniors Rachel Spaziano and Lilliana Luciani as captains this spring.
Rachel and Liliana have been a part of the soccer team ever since they arrived at The Morgan School, but have played soccer since munchkin league. Rachel plays anywhere she is needed in the midfield, with an outstanding ability to thrive at each position. Lili plays center defense and is often referred to as the “wall,” after shutting down anyone that tries to get by her. These girls have always had a natural ability to lead that definitely did not go unnoticed. The girls on the team call them, “Spaz” and “Luc”, they also happen to be cousins. The team members describe these two as positive, inclusive, encouraging, fun, and outgoing. Those are just some of the reasons the team loves them. They never fail to put a smile on someone’s face when they are in need.
After the passing of late head coach Steve Sullivan, Rachel and Lili were determined to end out their Morgan Soccer career with their best efforts. Even in the 2023 season, when the girls were only juniors and there were older captains, they still saw that the team was in need of support and provided it to the girls who were grieving, by comforting and lifting them up. Naturally, Lili and Rachel are very talented soccer players. They participate in a premier team called Rush, based out of North Branford, to enhance their soccer knowledge and careers.
Rachel and Lili will lead the team with love, determination, and fight. Morgan Girls Soccer has always been a very close-knit family, and because of their great passion for the sport and the family, they will encourage everyone to fight until the final whistle. They will do amazing things for this team. Congratulations, and good luck to Rachel Spaziano and Liliana Luciani.
