Several leadership opportunities are open to 2018-19 sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students have the chance to help the incoming freshmen transition into high school. The Morgan School offers a STEP program to these students as well as a Mentor Program.
This year, the STEP program takes place from August 14th, 15th and 16th, from 8 am to 12:30 pm. STEP provides the incoming freshman with a tour of the school and a walkthrough of their schedule, along with answering any questions the freshmen may have. Students interested in becoming a Husky Buddy or a STEP Leader will need to fill out an application that was sent to their email. This application is due on May 8th. Helping out with the STEP program counts as a quarter of a credit and looks good on a college application.
In the past few years, many students have chosen to participate in STEP, one of them being Junior Grace Roman. “I share my experience with the freshmen and try to lessen their anxiety,” she said. Grace has been a STEP leader for all three years she has been at Morgan.
The Husky Mentor 2018 Program is open to upperclassmen, specifically sophomores, juniors, and seniors to serve as role models for the freshmen. These leaders attend freshmen advisories during the first semester.
Junior Erin Lindsay has been a mentor for two years. Erin says, “I think it’s helpful because the freshmen get advice from students who went through it. They get to see a friendly face in the hallways.”
Students that are interested in becoming a mentor are required to fill out an application. The Mentor Program applications are due by April 27th. Students who are accepted will be notified May 31st. These students will then meet in the summer to prepare for the lessons they will teach in the fall of 2018.
