On Tuesday, February 20th, 2018, the class of 2018’s senior from boys basketball players (coached by Ken Beeman and Corey Zdunczyk) and senior cheerleaders (coached by Joni Zdunczyk and Stephanie White) celebrated their senior night. The seniors were Tyler Newfield and Patrick Marckovics from boys basketballs and Carly Schmidler, Emily Clark, Shelby Alfano, Grace DeVries, Meghan Schulze, Morgan Mester, Jackie Spear, Mikaela Gaudet and, Alexis Bach from cheerleading.
Tyler Newfield #10 has been on the team since his freshman year. A funny moment from playing Morgan basketball was “Deven Talarczyk in last year. He got crossed up and broke his ankles almost in the game. That was great.” Tyler loves playing basketball because “it’s a team sport and not only one guy can win it, and to be a good team, you got to move the ball and make your shots, and I love shooting the ball and playing defense.”
Patrick Markovics #25 has been on the team for his four years at Morgan. He said,”Over the past years, my experience was exciting on the basketball team. I enjoyed playing with my teammates and going out and giving it our best every game. My best memory was last year when I was a junior, and we beat Valley Regional on a buzzer beater. It was awesome to beat them on their own court.” Patrick hopes the team keeps on improving and getting better each year. Boys basketball finished the season off strong.
Shelby Alfano has been cheering for the Morgan team for three years and said, “being on this team has made me into a better person, and if I could change one thing, I would’ve joined this team my freshman year. They’re my family, and I love them more than anything. This team has been through a lot on and off the mat, and I know that we can achieve anything we set our minds to.”
Morgan Mester has been cheering for four years. Some of her favorite memories were made while competing with the team and that being on the team has been life-changing.
Our Morgan cheerleading team finished football and basketball season with the boys and currently is in the middle of their competition season. After winning Shorelines, the girls moved to NECA on February 24th at East Haven High and placed 2nd and States at New Haven Floyd Little Complex on the March 2nd. Good Luck girls and a great season for our 2017-2018 boys basketball team!
