Giving Tuesday, often known as #GivingTuesday, refers to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It is a movement to create a national day of giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season. Giving Tuesday was founded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation as a response to commercialization after the Thanksgiving season (Black Friday and Cyber Monday). A large number of organizations, including Google, Microsoft, Skype, Cisco, UNICEF, the Case Foundation, and others participate in this huge event.
#givingtuesday has been extremely successful since it started- Last year in 2014, $45.7 million was donated on Giving Tuesday ($34.9 million online, and $10.8 million offline). That did not include $7.5 million that the company Indiegogo claimed to have raised that day. This year, Giving Tuesday will be on December 1, 2015.
Some people aren’t able to donate money, but you can donate your time, voice, and thoughts to spread thankfulness. This year, Morgan is going to try to show their thanks. Next Tuesday before Thanksgiving, Mrs. Luther’s advisory is going to write letters to people they are thankful for, whether it be students or teachers. Mrs. Chausse’s advisory made cards for the soldiers and made posters for Beach Doughnut’s mitten collection. Mr. Serenbetz is collecting food for a dinner. Mrs. Mikulski is bringing canned food items for people in need. Senior Jayde Forbes says her advisory is writing letters to soldiers. Junior Jordyn Suraci’s advisory is making a blanket. Senior Maina Carey’s advisory is making a meal for a homeless family.
Students in the Kindness Club painted stockings for soldiers stationed abroad. Mrs. Cindy Stevens, a resident of Clinton and a mom of two Morgan graduates started sending care packages to the men and women of the military in 2006. This is the second occasion that the club has helped her this year.
Make sure you give thanks and spread love this Thanksgiving and holiday season!
