Friday Playlists

Friday Playlists is a chance for the Journalism students to share their love of music through themed playlists. One playlist will be published on the Friday of each week.

The first playlist will be published on April 14th. Stay tuned!

April Vacation – Abbey Norton

  1. Hanging on the Telephone by Flowers Forever oh, why can’t we talk again / don’t leave me hangin’ on the telephone

I first heard this song in the film Electrick Children. To me, this song feels like the transition between spring and summer. This is a perfect song to listen to while driving in your car or attempting to boost your mood. Listen here.

  1. Riptide by Vance Joy oh, lady, runnin’ down to the riptide, taken away to the dark side, I wanna be your left-hand man

I don’t think there’s a single soul out there who doesn’t love Riptide. Riptide is a feel-good song. It is easy to sing along to and is a spring classic. And what’s better than a self-explanatory music video? Listen (and watch) here.

  1. Maps for the Getaway by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness the years of hope, the months of rain / I guess that we survived it after all

The entire Canyon Moon album is amazing, but Maps for the Getaway sticks out to me. It is one of the songs you can listen to on rainy days while driving, or just feeling bored and lost. It also talks of roadtrips, a highly popular option during April Vacation, and how they get you away from your life. Listen here.

  1. Only Heather by Wild Nothing dressed in the moonlight and paler than bone / she has something that I’ve never known

Only Heather feels dazy, like laying in the grass and watching the sky or feeling light rays pop through the clouds. This isn’t a song you can jam to, but it will make you relax and enjoy the spring coming alive around you. Listen here.

  1. Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond how can I hurt when holding you?

    BUM, BUM, BUM! Listen here.

  1. Say My Name by ODESZA I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you

Sorry, no, this isn’t Destiny’s Child. ODESZA is perfect for spring and festival songs, and Say My Name is one of my favorites. An easy listen and fun song to listen to. Listen here.

  1. I Wanna Get Better by Bleachers in a blaze of fear I put a helmet on a helmet

Ever want to scream-sing out your car window while driving down a back road? Now’s your chance. Listen here.

  1. Synesthesia by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness – and I’ve known you all my life but I knew you long before that, too

This is one of the few songs I listen to where the verses are much better than the chorus. Andrew McMahon is a musical genius, and Synesthesia proudly represents his work. Listen here.

  1. Strawberry Swing by Coldplay I don’t mind / without you it’s a waste of time

Feeling stressed? Strawberry Swing is one of the top ten most relaxing songs on the planet, so don’t fret – just listen.

  1. Ophelia by The Lumineers you’ve been on my mind, girl, since the flood

The most folk-like song of the bunch, Ophelia feels like a rustic summer. Go chill in a barnyard. Listen here.

  1. Look On Up by Relient K – it’s like someone poked a pinhole in the canvas of the night

It’s the end of April Vacation, and you’re stargazing. Don’t sit there silently. Play this song over and over and over. Listen here.
