On Friday, October 25, journalism teacher Leslie Chausse’s E period journalism class took a trip to Southern Connecticut State University. The reason for this field trip was to attend the 2019 Journalism Day. The event involved many students from high schools in Milford, North Stonington, Hamden, and New Haven.
At this event, students were able to attend two 50-minute workshops. Some workshop options were photojournalism, high school censorship, public relations, and sports journalism.
Of the many sessions offered, one that stood out for Morgan Journalists was High School Censorship. At this workshop, presenter Jerry Dunklee focused on explaining the Hazelwood case and its impact on high school journalists today. Many different cases, such as Tinker v. Des Moines, were also discussed to show how Supreme Court rulings have evolved laws for journalism and censorship. Students in attendance learned how today’s censorship rules work for school journalism programs.
One interesting workshop that Mrs. Chausse attended was A Flexible Career Through Journalism. This session’s presenter, Catherine Sullivan-DeCanto, included how journalists need a strong sense of ethics and determination to get to the root of a story. Additionally, different careers in journalism were highlighted during this presentation. Opportunities such as being a press secretary and helping on political campaigns are available to those in a journalism career path.
After the two workshops, students in attendance were treated to a presentation from WTNH reporter, Mario Boone. The talk included details about Mario’s journey to becoming a journalist for WTNH as well as memories from his favorite stories. Once the initial presentation was over, students in the audience were able to ask questions regarding Mario’s career or ask him for advice.
Yet another Journalism Day at Southern Connecticut State University was a success for Morgan’s journalists. The workshops included new learning opportunities as well as ways to improve the PawPrint.
